What is it?

About Scar Camouflage

Scars can affect confidence and self-esteem in a deep and personal way. Scar camouflage is a medical tattooing treatment that involves implanting carefully matched, skin-toned pigment into the scar tissue to help it blend more naturally with the surrounding skin — reducing its visibility and helping you feel more comfortable in your own skin.

Every scar is unique, and every treatment is therefore completely bespoke. The colour is mixed and matched specifically to your individual skin tone, and the treatment is tailored to the size, depth, texture and location of your scar.

Downtime & Results

What to Expect

Downtime

Downtime is around 5–7 days. During this time you must keep the area clean and dry to allow the pigment to settle and the skin to heal for the most effective results.

For 2–4 weeks after treatment you may experience flaking, shedding, tenderness, dryness, itching, swelling, redness and tightness. This is completely normal and part of the healing process.

Results

After a few days the colour will gradually settle and increase in intensity over the following weeks. Many clients notice visible improvements after just a few sessions.

Depending on your treatment and degree of scarring, more than one appointment may be required. This is entirely dependent on your individual circumstances and will be discussed at consultation.

No Guarantee of Results

Results vary between every individual depending on skin type, scar age, severity and aftercare.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How old does my scar need to be?

Scars must be fully mature before treatment — typically a minimum of 12 months old. Fresh or active scars cannot be treated. This will be confirmed at your consultation.

Does it hurt?

Topical numbing cream is used throughout to minimise discomfort. Most clients describe the sensation as mild scratching or pressure. Sensitivity varies by location and individual.

How many sessions will I need?

This depends on the size, depth and colour of your scar. Some clients see significant results in one session; others may need 2–4 sessions. We will discuss this at consultation.

Can you work on self-harm scars?

Yes — we treat self-harm scars with the same care and discretion as any other treatment. All consultations are conducted in a safe, non-judgemental environment.

What is the downtime?

Around 5–7 days of keeping the area clean and dry. You may experience redness, flaking and tenderness for 2–4 weeks as the skin heals and the pigment settles.

Do I need a patch test?

Patch tests are optional for scar camouflage. If you would like one, please contact Penny directly to arrange this prior to your appointment.

What if my scar is raised or textured?

We may recommend medical needling first to improve the texture and surface of the scar before camouflage pigment is applied. This gives the best overall result.

Are results permanent?

Results are long-lasting but not technically permanent. The pigment may fade over time, particularly with sun exposure. SPF 50 is essential long-term to maintain results.
