It is vital that the below information has been read thoroughly and understood before booking your appointment.
To achieve the best results and ensure proper healing, it’s important to follow both pre-treatment and aftercare instructions carefully. Please read the guidelines below for the best results and smooth healing.
Before Your Appointment
To prepare for your treatment:
- Avoid alcohol, caffeine, and blood-thinning medications (e.g. aspirin, ibuprofen) 24 hours before your appointment. This leads to increased bleeding and affects your results and increases discomfort.
- Do not take fish oil or vitamin E for a week before your treatment (they can increase bleeding).
- Avoid sunbeds, direct sun exposure (e.g. sunbathing), chemical peels, facials, and active skincare (retinol, AHAs/BHAs) on the area for 14 days before your treatment.
- Do not wax or shave the treatment area for a minimum of 48 hours prior to your appointment.
- No Botox or Fillers on/around the treatment area for 2 weeks before your appointment (a minimum of 2 weeks, recommended 4 weeks after your appointment).
- Arrive with clean, makeup and product-free skin — especially on the treatment area.
- Stay well-hydrated in the 72 hours prior to your appointment (minimum 2 litres of water per day).
- Gently exfoliate and moisturise (perfume and active skincare ingredient free, check each product you are using)
the treatment area for 7 days prior to your appointment date. We want the treatment area to be as healthy as possible to achieve maximum results.
- Ensure you are well rested the night before your appointment.
- Arrive wearing loose, comfortable clothing to your appointment.
- Arrive on time to your appointment to allow for full treatment time.
- Plan ahead - SPMU requires downtime, the colour will appear much darker in the 48 hours post treatment and peeling/flaking for up to 7 days. Ensure you are scheduling your appointments with any events/holidays in mind. You must keep the area dry (with the exception of any balm’s you are provided to apply), keep this in mind for hair washing, events & holidays etc.
- FOR LIP BLUSH - ENSURE THAT IF YOU SUFFER WITH COLDSORES YOU HAVE SPOKEN WITH YOUR DOCTOR TO PRESCRIBE AND TAKEN A COURSE OF ANTI VIRAL MEDICATION A WEEK PRIOR TO YOUR APPOINTMENT,
- You may experience hypersensitivity around and/or during your menstrual cycle.
- Please note we are unable to tattoo over blemishes, sores and moles.
- Ensure you have read the pre & post treatment guidance and raise any questions/concerns with your practitioner with as much notice as possible. Do not be afraid to ask any questions, we are here to help and ensure you feel confident and comfortable going into the treatment.
AFTER YOUR APPOINTMENT
Aftercare Instructions
- Avoid alcohol and caffeine for 24 hours post treatment.
- Gently blot the treatment area with a clean, dry cotton pad during the 24 hours post treatment to avoid lymph build up,
- Do not get the treatment area wet until the peeling/flaking phase has completed. If the area does become wet, dab (do not rub) the treatment area with a clean, dry cotton pad/tissue.
- Do not touch the area until the peeling/flaking phase has completed. If you do need to touch the area, e.g to apply aftercare balm, ensure your hands are thoroughly cleaned and dry and do so with a clean cotton bud/pad.
- Do not pick, itch or rub the treated area. This is vital to avoid pulling pigment prematurely and effecting the healed result.
- Do not apply any makeup, products or creams on or directly around the treated area until fully healed.
- Avoid extreme temperatures, UV light or sun exposure for a minimum of two weeks post treatment. After this window, ensure SPF protection is generously and consistently applied when exposed to direct sunlight/UV light.
- Avoid excessive sweating for two weeks. Sweat contains salt which can result in infection and fade your tattoo, which can also affect the colour. Moderate exercise is permitted.
- Avoid saunas, steam rooms, hot tubs, swimming pools and hot baths/showers for a minimum of two weeks.
- Avoid massages, facials or skin treatments for a minimum of two weeks.
- Avoid exfoliants, retinol acids or AHA’s directly on or around the treatment area.
- For Lip Blush treatments, apply the Vitamin balm provided to you generously and consistently (every 2-3 hours, and whenever dryness is felt) with a fresh clean cotton bud and clean hands each time, until the peeling/flaking phase has completed.
- For Lip Blush treatments, use straws for all beverages and eat in small bites to avoid biting directly into food and contacting the treated area until the peeling/flaking stage phase has completed. Avoid oily, salty and spicy foods.
Post Healing Guidance
- There is never any complete guarantee of Micropigmentation results, this will always vary depending on skin type, aftercare and lifestyle.
- To get the best out of your results long term, ensure you always use a minimum SPF 50 on the treated area (SPF Lip Balms are great for on the go protection) to protect your pigment. Sun exposure is the number one cause of fading and colour alteration.
- Do not use chemical exfoliants on the area, this causes increased fading.
- Do not laser (including IPL) the area. If you are having laser treatments done, ensure you inform your practitioner prior to your treatment.
The Healing Cycle
- 72 Hours after your appointment you may experience swelling, redness, tightness, dryness, itching and tenderness. This is completely normal.
- The colour will be up to 50% darker immediately after your appointment, and may continue to develop darker for the next 48 hours. This is due to the pigment oxidising in the skin, effectively “flushing it out”.
- For Lip Blush, you will then begin to experience “flaking/peeling/shedding” - it is vital that you do not pick, itch, scratch or rub the area, you must allow this cycle to happen naturally as frustrating as it may feel.
- For Microblading, you may will then begin to experience “scabbing/flaking/shedding” - it is vital that you do not pick, itch, scratch or rub the area, you must allow this cycle to happen naturally as frustrating as it may feel.
- Once this phase has completed, it may look like the colour/shape has disappeared, please do not worry, this is completely normal and part of the healing cycle. As the skin continues to heal on the inside, the colour will begin to show again. This is called the “ghosting phase” and may reoccur multiple times in the 4 weeks post your first treatment.
- Once you have hit four weeks, you are ready to schedule your top up appointment (recommended at 4-6 weeks for Microblading and 6-8 weeks for Lip Blush). At the top up appointment we will add/amend the pigment colour, make any adjustments to the shape, and touch up any areas that have not held the pigment as we aimed for.
- This is why we always advise to opt for a lighter pigment colour and/or less “bold” shape at your initial appointment, as we can always add to this at your top up appointment.
- It is absolutely vital that you are aware and understand the healing cycle, its different phases and possible scenarios prior to your first treatment. This will avoid any panic or dissatisfaction. If you are ever unsure or nervous, please read through this information again and reach out to your practitioner if you still have any questions or concerns.
